Diana Leigh Avera

On May 21, 1982, Diana was arrested for disorderly conduct and involuntarily committed to Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama. While there, she underwent electroconvulsive treatments and other therapies that left her deeply altered. Her family remembers visiting her and finding Diana barely able to walk or speak, describing her as “like a zombie.”

Just a few months later, in August 1982, Diana escaped from the hospital. Her family was assured at the time that both the hospital and local law enforcement were taking steps to list her as missing and investigate her disappearance. Heartbreakingly, they later learned this was not the case. Diana was not officially recorded as missing until 2020, almost forty years after she vanished.

For decades, Diana’s loved ones have carried the weight of uncertainty, searching for answers that never came. They continue to hold onto hope that someone, somewhere, knows what happened to her and can help bring long-awaited peace to her family.
