Shane Eric James Smith

October of 1999, in Calgary, Alberta, a beautiful soul came into the world, Shane Eric James Smith. Raised in Chestermere, Shane was deeply cherished by his loving parents and sister. He grew to be a kind and thoughtful son, a devoted brother, and a loyal friend. To Shane, those around him weren’t just acquaintances, they were family.

Shane had a huge heart. He loved cars, video games, animals, and his friends. His beloved cat, Jewel, was by his side for 17 years, and he dreamed of one day having a husky dog of his own. Shane was known for his kindness, generosity, and the gentle eyes that reflected his good nature.

But on June 6, 2020, Shane’s life was tragically taken far too soon. At only 20 years old, his bright future, his dreams, and his boundless capacity for kindness were heartbreakingly cut short. Shane was last seen on the evening of Saturday, June 6, in the community of McKenzie Towne. Authorities believe he was murdered later that night at a residence in southeast Calgary.

Years have passed, yet Shane’s body has still not been found. His family continues to live a heartbreaking reality, waking each day without answers, without the chance to lay him to rest, without the closure they so desperately need. No parent, no sister, no loved one should have to endure this kind of pain.

The family respectfully asks that members of the public remain mindful and considerate when walking along the Bow River. If you notice anything unusual or come across items of clothing that may match what Shane was last seen wearing, please contact the police immediately.

A message from Shane’s family:

Cassie Lynn Smith (Shane’s loving sister)

My dear sweet beautiful brother Shane

~It has been 15 days since my heart broke and my stomach sank while I reported you missing. While I prayed you were just doing something silly. Only to find out a few days later that someone so cruel had stolen the most important person into the world away from me. To find out you wouldn’t be coming to surprise me on my birthday. That so many firsts in my life I won’t get to celebrate with you. I don’t know how live my life without you. And I pray every day that someone will do the right thing and help us bring you home to say goodbye the way you deserve. I’m so sorry Shane. I will fight for justice for you for the rest of my live and I will love and miss you forever.

Shirley Tasker Smith (Shane’s loving mom)

~To those who know where my beautiful son has been hidden, how would you like it if it was your parents out there searching for your body every day? Think about it…SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT IT!!! This is so unfair to my son Shane and to us. Think of what it would be like for your parents. Is it hurting you to think of that?
That is our life every minute of every day.
You have the ability to stop this horror. Look at my beautiful son does he deserve to be out there all alone. Phone in anonymously and say where my beautiful son is so we can lay him to rest. Please I beg of you
Please share this. I need the help of Calgarians and the outlying area surrounding Calgary.

Bill Smith (Shane’s loving father)

~It has now been 7 weeks since our son Shane was murdered by someone he called his friend.
Then the murderer had help from other so called friends to move my sons body from the crime scene and hide it from all of us.
This has been an absolute nightmare as we search daily to find Shane’s body in order to lay him to rest properly.
We have pleaded with the accused as well as publicly to anyone who can help locate our son.
There are people that know where Shane has been placed but refuse to come forward or even call in anonymously.
We don’t care who you are —- all we want is our son’s body—- How can that be too much to ask for— our lives will never be the same and it is very very hard to continue from day to day.
Shane is my only son and now there is a huge piece of my heart torn out and can never be replaced.
Please someone do the right thing and help us find our son Shane.
