Patrick “Paddy” Weymouth Paddon
In the quiet early hours of November 29, 1969, 17-year-old Patrick “Paddy” Paddon set out with his father, Bernard, and his uncle, Neil, for a day of deer hunting in the Burnside area of Colchester County, near Upper Stewiacke and Pembroke Road. It was meant to be a simple family outing, one of their last chances to hunt together before the season closed.
Paddy was a bright and capable young man, a Grade 11 student at Prince Andrew High School (now Woodlawn High) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where he lived with his family. The second oldest of four children, Paddy was known for his kindness, curiosity, and love of the outdoors. Over the years, he had learned invaluable bushcraft and hunting skills from an Indigenous family friend who took him under his wing.
That morning, Paddy entered the woods well prepared, carrying food, a safety flare, a compass, a pocket watch, and matches carefully sealed in wax to ensure they would light even in the rain. He wore a warm, reversible, water-repellent coat, his family later recalled how thoughtful and meticulous he was about being ready for any situation.
The group began their hunt near 2491 Pembroke Road, about 500 yards from a family friend’s farmhouse, where they planned to meet again at noon. Before parting ways, Bernard reminded his son, “Be careful, and I’ll see you back at the farm at noon,” joking as Paddy walked away, “Don’t shoot too many deer.”
The plan was simple: no one would cross the road or the river, and everyone would return to the farmhouse for lunch. Confident in his son’s strong sense of direction and experience in the woods, Bernard felt reassured. But as the morning passed and the family gathered at the meeting point, Paddy never arrived. Despite an extensive search that followed, he was never found.
Decades later, Paddy’s family still clings to hope, longing for the day they might be reunited with their beloved son.
